Cue photos with Grant on the red carpet and Q & A with us, the “filmmakers!” Despite our film school, art school and journalistic backgrounds, we don’t traditionally call ourselves filmmakers, but after this experience it’s clear we fit a modern definition: a filmmaker uses the art of storytelling with words and visuals to create emotion. We were thrilled to learn that our film would be screened at the 4th annual Georgia Film Festival and, while Arthur couldn’t attend, we were delightfully surprised that Saturday when Grant Henry was in the theater with us. The festival is run by the University of North Georgia’s Journalism, Media and Communication department which includes a film program. That opportunity presented itself this past June when we learned of and entered the Georgia Film Festival Short Documentary category. Arthur made time to put his editing hat on and completed a longer version of Grant’s story, and suggested we consider entering it into film festivals.

When we returned to the footage 18 months later, we found it rich and full of potential. After we shot, other work pulled us away, and we didn’t complete that one-minute test video. We certainly enjoyed our time shooting, getting to know Grant and learning about his own faith story. Nonetheless, given our open-minded attitude, we decided to go for it. We didn’t know too much about Grant or the vision behind his unique bars, which have stirred controversy for their theme and décor, which some consider to be irreverent. EATER called the Athens location one of the weirdest bars in Athens. Our new shooter, Arthur Thompson, suggested Grant Henry, owner of the iconic bars in Atlanta and Athens called Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room Emporium.

We brainstormed potential subjects in Atlanta with whom we could spend a half day to create a short personality profile video, similar to the series we were set to launch. While preparing to begin a 14-video, seven-state video series with some new crew members, Charles thought it wise to make a short test video. Our first entry into a film festival was a fortunate accident what began as a one-minute test video grew into a true documentary short. While we didn’t win one of the five awards given for the 52 films screened, we were thrilled to be a finalist for “ How Grant Henry Became Sister Louisa,” about, arguably, one of the most interesting men in Atlanta.
